With the heightened health and safety concerns over the past year, more customers have adopted and embraced contactless digital payment methods. Contactless payments provide convenience to both customers and merchants alike as they are easy to use, secure and they require less physical contact.
A recent study by Mastercard found that 75% of South African respondents stated they use contactless payments, with 88% saying they view contactless payments as a cleaner way to pay and 71% preferring to shop at merchants where contactless is accepted.
What is Apple Pay and how does it work?
Apple Pay, is an NFC-enabled mobile payment technology that allows customers to load supported* bank issued credit and debit cards into a virtual wallet on their compatible Apple devices. Once the card has been verified by the issuing bank and is active, the customer can use their iPhone or Apple Watch to make contactless payments at any NFC-enabled payment device (PED or Terminal) that accepts tap-to-pay / contactless cards. Transaction authentication on the device is made using fingerprint (Touch ID), image recognition (Face ID), or with a passcode.
